Our story

Il Mulino di Trastevere Drawing

The earliest written reference to Il Mulino dates back to 1889. At the time, the building functioned as a wheat mill – hence the Italian name ‘Il Mulino’ – and was owned by the ‘Ospizio Apostolico di San Michele’, a benevolent organization aimed at helping orphaned children to break out of poverty by teaching them a trade.

But we also know that the building’s history dates back even further: Before 1889, Il Mulino functioned as wool mill which, through its strategic position along the 1st-century Roman ‘Acqua Paola Aqueduct’, could harness the energy of flowing water as a means to wash and spin wool.

In the past century, Il Mulino has been transformed into an apartment building and, with our recent renovation work, has taken on a fresh, new shape.
